Travel to East Java

Our name comes from Mount Semeru, the highest volcano on Java. East Java is our home, and our team is based in Surabaya.

Most visitors come for two moments. The first is Ijen, where you hike in the dark to see blue flames and a turquoise crater lake. The second is Bromo, where the sun rises over a smoking crater and a sea of sand.

Both are easy to reach from Bali. Ijen is about an hour by ferry from west Bali. You can do both in 3 days and be back on the beach by the weekend. Or cross the whole of Java in 8 days, from the temples of Yogyakarta to Bali.

Every trip is private, with your own driver and an English-speaking local guide.

If a Volcano Is Closed on Your Day

Volcanoes and national parks sometimes close at short notice because of fires, eruptions, gas or ceremonies. It’s for your safety. Here is what we do.

1

We tell you first

We check the park status every day before your trip and message you on WhatsApp.

2

We try another day

If your plan has room, we move the hike to the next morning.

3

We swap the activity

For example, Baluran savanna instead of Ijen. We refund the tickets and jeep for the part you missed.

4

Or you get it all back

If the whole trip can’t go ahead, you choose a 100% refund or new dates, free of charge.

East Java Guide & FAQ

How hard is the Ijen hike?

About 3 km uphill on a wide path, 1.5 to 2 hours. Most people with normal fitness can do it. Porters with trolleys are available if you get tired.

Is the sulphur gas dangerous?

It can be if you breathe in a lot of it, so you wear a gas mask near the crater. Our tours include the mask. Rangers close the crater when the gas is too strong. If you have asthma or a heart or lung condition, tell us before you book.

Will I definitely see the blue fire?

No one can promise it. The blue fire can only be seen in the dark before dawn, and thick gas, wind or rain can hide it. The crater can also close at short notice. We start early to give you the best chance.

When is the best time to go?

The dry season, from about April to October, usually has the clearest skies for sunrise. July, August and holidays are the busiest, and Bromo tickets can sell out, so book early.

How do I book and pay?

Message us on WhatsApp or press “Book With Us”. We send you a day-by-day plan and a fixed price. A 10% deposit confirms your booking, and you pay the rest when you arrive. How to book and pay

Can you change the plan?

Yes. Every trip is private, so you can change the days, hotels and pace, and ask for as many changes as you like before you book. If a volcano or park closes, we change the plan and refund the part you missed. Cancellation Policy
